Carolyn Dudley – “Fishing” 24” x 30”
2nd Place –
Nancy Zedd – “Morning Mist on the Elizabeth River” (oil on wood panel)
28” x 22”
Having lived on the Elizabeth River for seven years, I had the privilege of seeing the natural activity of our river’s shoreline begin to surface. I feel this painting captures the essence of the Elizabeth in color, light and its “value to our community.”
Marlow D’Oriano – “Individuality of the American Oyster” (mixed media) 40”x30” (Acrylic on Canvas)
The colors and textures of our local coastal environments are an ongoing theme in my work. Oysters capture the essence of our waterways as a symbol of their health and vitality. I am inspired by the hard work of local organizations to restore oyster populations and hope my work can be of use to bring some attention and support to those efforts.
Eastern Branch Award
Melanie Chambers Hartman – “Imagine” (oil) 16” x 20”
The vision of the Eastern Branch Env. Restoration Strategy is to create “A healthy, enduring Eastern Branch, with abundant habitat supporting thriving wildlife and will be a beloved destination for residents. It will connect diverse neighborhoods, sustain model industries, and provide recreation; with well-coordinated support across three cities.” I painted what I imagine this vision, along stretches of the Eastern Branch, will look like when it becomes a reality.

"I was very impressed with the RIVERfest event overall and loved the enthusiasm that you all generated around local environmental education and restoration. I hope to have more opportunities to support your efforts through my art, particularly any initiatives involving oyster population restoration. Thank you for including artists in the local environmental conversation!"
-Marlowe D'Oriano, artist
I wanted to thank you all for the opportunity to show with you.
It's a cause near and dear to my heart and home.
-Catherine Sprague, artist
"I really thought RIVERFest was a terrific event. The energy and buzz was fantastic – particularly the “flow” of guests from the boat building out front all the way to the tents and barge on the pier. I was at a nearby civic league meeting last night (Freemason neighborhood) and they raved about it, as have many others from around downtown this week.
Again, congratulations to you and your team for a great event. Thanks for letting us play a small role."
-Stephen E. Kirkland, Executive Director, Nauticus
